Human existence was forever changed by the death and resurrection of Jesus. Before He appeared on earth, mankind was so conscious of guilt and sin that all religions required people to do various things to appease unknowable ‘gods.’
But Jesus’ life, death and resurrection reveal the truth about the God who created everything. He loves us so passionately that He came humbly into his own creation in the form of the man Jesus to eradicate our guilt by re-creating us and then drawing us into intimate loving relationship:
“17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:14-20
God created us in Christ to adopt both men and women as “sons” – because only sons got an inheritance in those days. In that age of heavy labour, sons legally inherited from their Father and became responsible for the care of the whole family.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:3-6
He wants us as His own dearly loved children – sharing the blissful, loving intimacy that has always existed between Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
