The nature of human beings

Humans are made in the image of God who is a personal Spirit Being

God is Spirit.[1]  Humans are made in God’s image.[2]  Therefore, we are spirit beings.  We own a soul (our mind, will and emotions) and while on earth, we live in a mortal (i.e. death-doomed) body.[3]  We are not our body.  We are not even our mind.  In fact we can change our mind and tell it what to think.  When our body dies, our spirit and soul live on for the rest of eternity.

Why we are free to choose to be loving or unloving

God is Love.  We were created in His image to be love-beings.  But love is voluntary.  It can’t be forced.  We’re only free to respond to love if we are free to reject love.  So God designed us with the freedom to choose to be loving or unloving, but He only authorised us to make loving choices.

Tragically, we are all born with a corrupt spirit inherited from the unloving choices (i.e. sin) of the first humans.  So it is not God, but the unloving choices of created beings that account for all the evil in this life.
