Human observation of the origin of the universe is obviously impossible. So theories about origins are not science – they are religious beliefs. The Christians who established science in the 17th century knew that, so their presuppositions about origins were drawn from what God revealed to humans in the bible.
They accepted that God is an uncreated Spirit Being, existing eternally as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They believed that God the Son appeared on earth in the body of the man Jesus. With that framework, they believed the New Testament teaching that all things were created in God the Son:
“15 He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; 16 for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17, RSV
Long before He came to earth as the man Jesus, everything was created in God the Son. Ever since creation, everything has been held together in God the Son Who is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient. So He is central to ontology (the nature of existence) as we will see in the next section. But what does that mean for cosmology?
Firstly, it means the universe has a Designer and Owner. Jesus is the Owner (i.e. Lord) of the universe and everyone in it – even if we don’t know Him.
